Posture of Humble Boldness

Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us. (Romans 12:3 NLT)

When we hear the word “posture,” we often think of our physical alignment—shoulders, back, hips—and how that affects our health. But posture isn’t just physical. We can also talk about our mental and emotional posture—how we align ourselves with friends, culture, music, movies, and more.

Last week at camp, I focused on a third kind: our spiritual posture. I asked the campers: How are you aligned with God?

There are many ways to explore this idea, but I emphasized one important balance—not thinking too much or too little of ourselves. It’s the tension between humility and boldness, and it’s not always easy to navigate.

When God called Moses from the burning bush, Moses responded with hesitation: “Who am I that I should go…?”(Exodus 3:11). He saw his limitations clearly. But God promised to be with him, and that gave Moses the boldness to stand before Pharaoh.

David, a young shepherd, approached Goliath with no armor or military status. He came humbly, but with holy confidence:
“You come against me with sword… but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty…” (1 Samuel 17:45 NIV).
David knew he was no match for the giant on his own. His boldness wasn’t rooted in his own ability—but in his unwavering trust that God was his strength.

That’s what I call humble boldness.

Weakness says, “I can’t do this.”
Humble boldness says, “I am strong, because God will do it through me.”

When we are aligned with God, in a posture of surrendered humility, we can tap into the strength and boldness God will give us.

God,

Thank you for your faithfulness and strength in our lives. Help us to be honest in our understanding of ourselves, especially in light of our relationship with you. Help us to live in holy but humble boldness because you are our God. AMEN.
