Hope for Breakthrough

Blessed is the one
    who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
    or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,

“In Christian circles, a spiritual breakthrough can be defined as a time when a person is saved, gains a deeper understanding of biblical truth, receives an answer to prayer, or wins the victory over a besetting sin. Paul’s experience on the Damascus Road could be considered a spiritual breakthrough, as he saw for the first time who Jesus really is (Acts 9). Peter’s experience on the rooftop in Joppa could be considered a spiritual breakthrough, as he learned that the gospel was for all people, Gentiles included (Acts 10). The conversion of Lydia on the outskirts of Philippi could be seen as a spiritual breakthrough, as she was the first person saved on European soil (Acts 16). Does a situation seem hopeless? Then it probably needs breakthrough.

Today is “Breakthrough Sunday” at our church. What will God do?

I don’t know.

We’ve been praying and fasting for breakthrough in marriages, for prodigals, in health situations, for finances, and a number of other areas.

Just like the roots of a tree go deep into the ground, drinking in water and nutrients, our spiritual roots must go deep into God, drinking the Living Water of hope. Without hope – without a vision of what could be – we are unlikely to see an end to the struggle.

Today, may we be people who are reminded by scriptures like these that God is able – more than able – to do whatever we need.

  1. “Do not be afraid! Don’t be discouraged by this mighty army, for the battle is not yours, but God’s” (2 Chronicles 20:15).
  2. “But you will not even need to fight. Take your positions; then stand still and watch the LORD’s victory. He is with you, O people of Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid or discouraged. Go out against them tomorrow, for the LORD is with you!” (2 Chronicles 20:17),
  3. “Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
  4. “I will give him the key to the house of David–the highest position in the royal court. When he opens doors, no one will be able to close them; when he closes doors, no one will be able to open them” (Isaiah 22:22).

Today, may we be people who hold onto hope, even in the face of daunting circumstances, because we know our God.

Today, may we be people who see breakthrough in the challenging situations of our life.
