Delight

Delight – to please someone greatly, to take great pleasure in something

“Set your mind and keep focused habitually on the things above [the heavenly things], not on things that are on the earth [which have only temporal value].” (Colossians 3:2 AMP)

What is your mind set on? I, personally, am challenged to consider what I delight in. I find myself caught on projects or kids or other things that, while not necessarily “bad,” may certainly be a distraction to the better, heavenly things. The Psalmist tells us that if someone sets their minds on – and delights in – the Word of God they meditate on it day and night. That word “delight” caught me because I know that you think about what you delight in.

Delight in greed? You think about how to make more money or have more power.

Delight in sports? You think about your favorite team or player and their games and statistics and related information.

Delight in helping people? You think about how to help people with your time, money, and talents.

Delight in your spouse or children? You think about how to make them happy.

Psalm 37 reminds us:

“Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires…The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.” (Psalm 37:4, 23 NLT)

“The Lord your God will delight in you if you obey his voice and keep the commands and decrees written in this Book of Instruction, and if you turn to the Lord your God with all your heart and soul.” (Deuteronomy 30:10 NLT)

And we are told that God delights in US!! He wants to give us our heart’s desires and to direct our steps, indeed, to direct every detail. And when we turn to God with all our heart and soul and then we obey his voice and keep his commands, he delights in us!

God,

Thank you for your call for us to delight in you so you can give us our hearts’ desires and direct our steps. Thank you for your faithfulness and your delight in us. Help us to desire you with all our heart and soul and to delight in you. We pray in Christ’s name, Amen.
