I have lived a life with many sorrows,
Though I could say I’ve always had tomorrow.
Yet somehow, I do not remember yesterday.
I have wanted to take my life.
It was hard to find the light,
So turning off the power seemed like it would solve my plight.
I have given my all to a redemptive Christ,
Then sunk into the worries of life,
Forgetting He had already paid the price.
I have wrapped my mind up in what I can do,
And ruined the plans God wanted me to pursue.
And yet…
When I walk away and choose
Something I would surely lose,
Or run ahead with all my plans,
Forgetting they were in His hands.
Even when I choose to see
Only the very worst version of me,
The King, the Lord, the Most High,
The One who chose to give His life—
He calls me home,
Revives my soul,
Makes me whole, though I was broken long ago.
He never asks me to pay the price,
Or provide my own sacrifice.
His gifts, the Lord so freely gives,
And I will always be His.
Just as King Nebuchadnezzar was warned to turn around,
I thank the Lord He never lets me wander for too long.
He calls me back when I have strayed,
Though I forget the vows I’ve made.
He lifts my eyes from all I cling,
And turns them back toward the King.*
God,
You are the King of all the earth, the blessed and only Ruler of the world, the Lord of lords. How majestic is your name in all the earth! Today, we pray that you will renew us by your Word and Spirit, revitalize us in our faith, and help us recognize your goodness and grace toward us. You are our refuge and fortress, the God in whom we trust. You are our shelter, Most High, and we rest in you. AMEN.
