It’s too quiet

At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow [in submission], of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess and openly acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord (sovereign God), to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:10 AMP)

If you are a parent, you know the instant anxiety you experience when you realize all-of-a-sudden that it’s too quiet. Where’s my child? What are they into? What are they doing? Why do I not hear anything from them? Most of the time the too-quiet child is up to some mischief and doesn’t want to be discovered, or is innocently reading, playing, or sleeping. Occasionally, these moments take a terrible turn, but this post is not about that.

Last week I was thinking about how different the nation and world have felt since the US election in November, 2025. The heightened anxiety leading up to that day seemed to dissipate quickly once the election results were finalized. Whether or not you believe the right candidate(s) were elected to the office(s) you were following, there was a sense of relief that the election was over and the nation didn’t erupt into violence. The months since have seen their share of media and Congressional spats over the president’s Cabinet picks and executive orders, but overall, it feels like the country has returned to a more familiar political equilibrium, similar to the pre-2016 era. I wondered (and hoped!) that perhaps we’ve collectively taken a deep breath and moved on with life.

Then I realized it had been too quiet. There’s no way that the people who lost in the last election, but think they had been (and should be) leading this nation, are going to give up their influence and power so easily. There’s no evidence that hubris has been ceded to humility.

There’s no way the enemy of our souls, faced with a new government leadership rooting out corruption, waste, fraud, and possibly evils as serious as human trafficking, will simply roll over and quit. For millennia, he has patiently and effectively infected more and more of humanity with sin. While occasional revivals or reformations may slow him down, they don’t completely derail his efforts. Though today it may feel like we are barreling toward the end of the age, not every knee has bowed, nor every tongue confessed that Jesus is Lord. So, the enemy will continue his work to deceive, distract, deflect, and destroy.

Just like with children, if it’s been awhile since you’ve heard anything, don’t assume there’s no action. There’s plenty to pray about in this seemingly quiet time.

Lord God, Heavenly Father,

You are the boundless power of the Universe, the One whose perfect Love and Justice govern all. We praise you for who you are. We come before you to intercede for this nation and the world. We thank you for the clear results of November’s election, the peaceful transfer of power, and the safe inauguration of President Trump. We are grateful for the respite from the overt chaos that marked the previous season, giving our wounded nation some time to heal from its deep and bitter divisions.

We thank you that you are aware of and watching anyone and everyone whose will does not line up with yours. Where there are people bent on evil, wickedness or strife, we pray you will arise, Lord, and scatter and shatter your enemies. As smoke is driven away and wax melts before a fire, may the plans of the wicked and guilty perish in your presence.

We ask for your protection over our leaders, our communication, travel, energy systems, water, and natural resources. May your Spirit and angel armies thwart any plans of damage, destruction, or division, and may they prevent any attempt to stir hatred, violence, or discord in our society.

In Jesus’ name, we pray for the protection of Mr. Trump, his allies, and their families. Purify their hearts and guide them to seek first your Kingdom, so they may completely honor your good will and purposes. Stir within your Church a continued commitment to pray for the protection of our leaders and our nation.

Pour out your Holy Spirit upon this land during this time. Bring about an Awakening among the people, Revival and Reformation in your Church, and the cleansing and purifying of this nation. May we be a city on a hill that cannot be hidden, and a light of your righteousness, hope, and justice for all nations. We ask all of this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

First of all, then, I urge that petitions (specific requests), prayers, intercessions (prayers for others) and thanksgivings be offered on behalf of all people, for kings and all who are in [positions of] high authority, so that we may live a peaceful and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. (1 Timothy 2:1-2 AMP)

“You are the light of [Christ to] the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. (Matthew 5:14-15 AMP

Let God arise, and His enemies be scattered;
Let those who hate Him flee before Him.
As smoke is driven away, so drive them away;
As wax melts before the fire,
So let the wicked and guilty perish before [the presence of] God.
But let the righteous be glad; let them be in good spirits before God,
Yes, let them rejoice with delight.

Sing to God, sing praises to His name;
Lift up a song for Him who rides through the desert—
His name is the Lord—be in good spirits before Him.
A father of the fatherless and a judge and protector of the widows,
Is God in His holy habitation.
God makes a home for the lonely;
He leads the prisoners into prosperity,
Only the stubborn and rebellious dwell in a parched land.
O God, when You went out before Your people,
When You marched through the wilderness, Selah.

The earth trembled;
The heavens also poured down rain at the presence of God;
Sinai itself trembled at the presence of God, the God of Israel.
God is to us a God of acts of salvation;
And to God the Lord belong escapes from death [setting us free].
Surely God will shatter the head of His enemies,
The hairy scalp of one who goes on in his guilty ways. (Psalm 68:1-8, 20-21 AMP)
