So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. (Ephesians 4:11-13 NIV)
Yesterday, a new friend and I enjoyed a long walk and talk in a nature preserve. In the beautiful early October sunshine, we chatted about family, jobs, and church. Eventually, the conversation turned to pastors and their sermons. Both of us grew up in churches and have experienced different pastors and preaching styles, but we agreed that we appreciate someone who can dig deeply into a Bible passage, connect it to other parts of Scripture, and then relate it to our “real lives.” I’ve been in several churches where the pastor used a lectionary—an organized system of related readings for each Sunday. Our current pastor preaches on themes and uses a lot of storytelling to illustrate his points. Regardless of personal style, let us pray that every Spirit-led pastor preaching today will rightly discern what God wants preached to each local congregation and communicate effectively to hearts that are open to listening.
Lord,
Thank you for the men and women you have called to serve in spiritual leadership in congregations around the world. Thank you for the calling, training, and ongoing guidance you provide for them.
Today, we pray that preachers will be men and women of deep, Spirit-led faith, whose desire to honor you and faithfully preach and teach your Word outweighs any personal pride or desire for recognition. Guide them as they prepare, study, and share your Word. May their preaching be clear, faithfully explain the meaning of Scripture, and help people understand what you want them to hear.
We pray that congregations will be filled with people whose hearts are open to what you want to teach them. Keep us from becoming hard-hearted. Instead, help us remain lifelong learners, discerning listeners, and seekers of wisdom and knowledge. Holy Spirit, guide both preachers and congregants to seek you wholeheartedly and to honor you through the way they live. Above all, God, we pray that you will work within our hearts, minds, and spirits, transforming us to become more like Jesus. It is in his name that we pray. Amen.
Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. (2 Timothy 4:2 NIV)
They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the meaning so that the people understood what was being read. (Nehemiah 8:8 NIV)
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword… (Hebrews 4:12 NIV)
What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words. (1 Corinthians 2:12-13 NIV)
