True spiritual power

“Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” (Proverbs 16:3 NIV)

“The biggest thing I battle on a consistent basis is performance. The desire I have to be impressive; the pressure I feel to be impressive. The desire to pull on the power of my natural gifting, or even the power of a really strong corporate song that I KNOW everyone will sing enthusiastically… and surrender all that natural “power”… to be lead by the Spirit. And even though I want this more than ANYTHING, it is still a battle every time I lead. The more buzz and anticipation for an event, the deeper I have to surrender. I wage war against the formulas that tell me that “these songs+these arrangements+the right musical execution=power”, because it simply isn’t true. Not real, true spiritual power anyway. It may make for a solid feeling event but it doesn’t lead to the radical transformation and breakthrough I long to see. True spiritual power flows through obedience, and obedience through hearing His voice. And for all you planners out there, He doesn’t just speak before the service. 🙂 I have found many times He enjoys speaking His plans right in the middle of you flawlessly executing yours. 🙂 And for all those spontaneous people, He doesn’t just speak in the “moment”, but releases ideas and direction in quiet times set aside for preparation. The key is, to NEVER. STOP. LISTENING. Or OBEYING. Ever. We are ever dependent. That’s just the truth. Apart from Him, I can do nothing. So I keep trading all my impressive performances for a listening ear and a radical obedience.”

God, May we never stop listening, obeying, and remembering our dependence on you. No matter what our vocation or activities we call “life,” may they always be lived in communion with you and led by Holy Spirit. May our hearts, activities, and entire lives be committed to you, for your glory and honor, and for the sake of the furtherance of your Kingdom. We pray in Jesus’s name, Amen.
