Sun angels

O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!
Your glory is higher than the heavens. (Psalm 8:1 NLT)

Isn’t making snow angels fun? You lie on your back in the snow—bundled up in snow pants, a warm coat, boots, gloves, and a hat—and sweep your arms and legs side to side to form the shape of an angel. Now imagine doing that without all the bulky layers or freezing temperatures! I suppose you could try it on a beach, but then you’d just end up covered in sand. Yesterday, I did something I called a “sun angel.”

It’s been a full few days. On Friday and Saturday, we tackled house cleaning and post-winter yard work. Saturday and Sunday nights, we hosted different groups from church for dinner. In between, I’ve been juggling marketing tasks for the arts camp, planning the kids’ next school year, and connecting with new church members who are going through tough times. Add in Mom Taxi duties, dog walking, laundry, and all the other everyday responsibilities—and it’s no surprise that when my friend stopped by yesterday afternoon for a visit and a cup of tea, she found me lying in the front yard, soaking up the sunshine.

Imagine it: no cold, no bulky winter gear. Just you lying on the grass, the sun warming your face, a gentle breeze rustling the trees, and birds singing in the background. It was beautiful—peaceful, refreshing. That’s why I called it a “sun angel.” I don’t think I’ve ever done something like that before, but the feeling of being grounded and the gift of sunlight made it worth the risk of looking a little silly.

In that quiet moment, lying in the sun, I felt completely present—grateful for the stillness, the warmth, and the reminder that even in the busiest seasons, God invites us to rest. It was a pause, a breath, a gentle whisper of grace. Let us each rest in that same peace—the kind that doesn’t depend on our circumstances, but comes from simply being in the presence of the One who holds it all.

God,

Thank you for your grace that meets us in unexpected places, challenging circumstances, and everyday moments. Thank you for the gift of spring and the beautiful sunshine. Thank you for all your Creation and how it ministers to us. Help us to remember to come to you as a child and adore you for your goodness, your creations, and your grace. Abba, minister to us peace, we ask in Jesus’s name. AMEN.

O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!
Your glory is higher than the heavens.
You have taught children and infants
    to tell of your strength,
silencing your enemies
    and all who oppose you.

When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers—
the moon and the stars you set in place—
what are mere mortals that you should think about them,
human beings that you should care for them?
Yet you made them only a little lower than God
and crowned them with glory and honor. (Psalm 8:1-5 NLT)
