“As water reflects the face, so one’s life reflects the heart.” (Proverbs 27:19 NIV)
Last week I heard a phrase I’ve probably heard before but it struck me in a new way.
“Whatever you don’t water will die.”
So, obviously, if you don’t water your pet or your garden or you livestock or your crops they will die. Conversely, if you do water them, they will have a much better chance of living.
Aside from physical things, the spiritual, mental, and emotional things we don’t “water” matter, too. If we “water” lust or anger or frustration or greed or… you get the idea… we get more of them. And if we don’t water those things by indulging in them, they will – eventually – at least go dormant, if not altogether die.
Relationships are the same way. No “watering” of a marriage by its communication, date-nights, or prayer will not go well. Friendships “watered” by conversation, time spent together, and love and encouragement will thrive. What we water matters.
Living Water,
Help us discern what to water in our lives and what to let die so that we can honor you with our lives.
AMEN.
“On the final and climactic day of the Feast, Jesus took his stand. He cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Rivers of living water will brim and spill out of the depths of anyone who believes in me this way, just as the Scripture says.” (He said this in regard to the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were about to receive. The Spirit had not yet been given because Jesus had not yet been glorified.)” (John 7:38-39 MSG)
“The Fear-of-God is a spring of living water
so you won’t go off drinking from poisoned wells.” (Proverbs 14:27 MSG)
“I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years…” (Deuteronomy 30:19-20 NIV)
