“May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14 NIV)
It is a popular thing to encourage someone to “follow their heart.” In theory, this sounds great: be true to yourself, make yourself happy, etc. But in practice, following our heart can lead to trials and even disasters.
“The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.” (Jeremiah 17:9-10 NIV)
If we are led by our emotions, we may not be able to make good decisions because our emotions lie to us. If we are led by our emotions, we may struggle to keep from saying all we are thinking – and, therefore, hurt our relationships.
“He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, But whoever walks wisely will be delivered.” (Proverbs 28:26 NKJV)
Walking in God’s wisdom is a completely different approach to life. When we are tuned in to that Wisdom and the leading of Holy Spirit our emotions are honored, but not leading us. Whatever we “commune” with on an consistent basis will give birth to the dreams within us. If we commune with greed, hatred, gossip, accusations, lust, worry, and/or fears, our life dreams will reflect them. If we commune with the Word, Hope, the Spirit, and Love, our life dreams will reflect them.
“What you tune in to you will turn in to.” – R. Liphard
When we “commune” with the Spirit, we are then led by the Spirit
“For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.” (Romans 8:14 NIV)
“Let me emphasize this: As you yield to the dynamic life and power of the Holy Spirit, you will abandon the cravings of your self-life.” (Galatians 5:16 TPT)
And when our minds, hearts, and lives are led by the Spirit, there is peace.
“You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You.” (Isaiah 26:3 NIV)
Holy Spirit,
Thank you for living within us when we know Jesus as Lord and Savior. Help us to trust you, to commune with you and allow you to lead us, and to live the dynamic life you call us to live. Help us to tune in only to you and to be kept in perfect peace. We ask in Jesus’s name, AMEN.
